In a big win for the security forces today, two militants involved in the abduction and killing of Indian Army lieutenant Ummer Fayaz on May 10, 2017 were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir.
These two militants killed today are among the 11 militants gunned down in three separate encounters in various parts of the Valley, in wake of which the separatists have also called for a two-day shutdown. Only five months into service, Fayaz was on leave to attend his cousin sister’s wedding at Batapura, near Behibagh when he was abducted by terrorists at night.
The next day his bullet-riddled body was found at Herman Chowk in the heart of Shopian district..
Commissioned on 10 December 2016 Fayaz (from 2 Rajputana Rifles) was a a small apple farmer’s son, a bright officer who was good in sports. “He was an ideal officer,” said his senior officer remembering him.
FAYAZ’S KILLING AVENGED
On May 10, while speaking to India Today, Colonel Manu Sooden of CO 62 RR (DOGRA) had said, “This is dastardly attack of cowardice. Unknown gunmen picked up Lt Ummer Fayaz and killed him. We salute the martyr and stand by his family. We will get to the perpetrators and answer them in same language.”
Today’s feat is being read as nothing less than the Army’s revenge to Lt Ummer Fayaz’s killing.
